Rhode Island Renewable Energy Standard Program

The Rhode Island Renewable Energy Standard (RES) Act was established in 2004 through R.I. Gen. Laws Section 39-26-1-10. This law requires distribution companies and competitive electric suppliers to supply a specific percentage of their retail electricity from renewable resources in the electric generation they sell to Rhode Island customers. Distribution companies and competitive electric suppliers meet this requirement through the purchase of New England Pool Generation Information System (NEPOOL-GIS) certificates or by making an alternative compliance payment to the state’s Renewable Energy Development Fund.
